Foreign Minister Taro Kono told reporters at a press conference on Jan. 9 that he would visit Myanmar, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada from Jan. 11 to 18. In Myanmar, he will hold talks with Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing of the Myanmar Armed Forces. Kono intends to bring up the issue of the suppression of the Rohingya Muslims, an ethnic minority group in the country, and convey his concern to the Myanmar government. In Canada, Kono will attend in Vancouver a ministerial meeting on the issue of North Korea, which is continuing with its nuclear and missile development.
