Okinawa Times and Ryukyu Shimpo reported extensively on the weekend, Monday, and Tuesday on the unscheduled landings made by two Futenma-based helicopters at different locations in the island prefecture on Saturday and Monday, voicing strong criticism of the U.S. military for apparently failing to heed Okinawa’s desperate pleas for flight safety. Okinawa Times attributed an increase in mishaps involving U.S. military helicopters in the past year or so to enhanced training probably in preparation for a possible contingency on the Korean Peninsula.
