Ryukyu Shimpo and Okinawa Times highlighted the strong reactions voiced by local residents and officials, including Governor Onaga, to PACOM Commander Harris’s comment made to Defense Minister Onodera on Wednesday regarding the two latest unscheduled landings by Futenma-based helicopters. They were reportedly dismayed and angry over the admiral’s alleged comment saying he is satisfied that the pilots grounded the trouble-prone aircraft at the nearest safe locations. The dailies construed the admiral’s statement as a reflection of military logic, insisting that the U.S. military apparently discounts the safety of local residents.
