Kuryu promoted to NPA head

On Jan. 12, the Cabinet approved the promotion of National Police Agency’s Deputy Commissioner-General Shunichi Kuryu to succeed the retiring Commissioner-General Masayoshi Sakaguchi. Masamitsu Miura, director of the NPA Secretariat, will become deputy commissioner-general. Mitsuhiro Matsumoto, director general of the Security Bureau, will become director of the Secretariat. Takashi Murata, chief of the Osaka Prefectural Police Headquarters, will lead the Security Bureau. The appointments will become effective on Jan. 18.

 

Shuichi Kuryu

Commissioner-General of NPA. Joined NPA in 1981. Graduated from the Faculty of Law, the University of Tokyo. Previously served as director general of the Criminal Investigation Bureau and director of the NPA Secretariat. Appointed deputy commissioner-general in August 2016. Hails from Tokyo. 59 years old.

 

Masamitsu Miura

Deputy Commissioner-General of NPA. Graduated from the Faculty of Law, the University of Tokyo and joined NPA in 1982. Previously served as director general of the Criminal Investigation Bureau. Appointed director of the NPA Secretariat in August 2016. Hails from Kanagawa Prefecture. 58 years old.
