TOKYO — A senior lawmaker from Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party departed Tokyo on Thursday for Jakarta to attend a ceremony to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Japan and Indonesia.

Toshihiro Nikai, secretary general of the LDP, will attend the ceremony on Saturday as a special representative of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

He is also expected to meet with Indonesian President Joko Widodo to discuss countermeasures against tsunami.

Nikai, who played a key role in establishing Nov. 5 as World Tsunami Awareness Day, often visits Indonesia, which like Japan is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis.

He is scheduled to return to Japan on Sunday.
