Gist of joint statement issued after Japan-Australia summit

The following is the gist of a joint statement issued Thursday after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull held talks in Tokyo.

Japan and Australia will:

— work together to promote Japan’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy.

— beef up maritime security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

— seek to maximize pressure on North Korea.

— cooperate toward the signing of the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade deal.
