Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Secretary General Toshihiro Nikai met with Chen Zhu, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress, at the Diet on Jan. 22.

Pointing out that 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the conclusion of the Japan-China Treaty of Peace and Friendship, Nikai said: “We must make this a memorable 40th anniversary. If we fail to convey our enthusiasm to make preparations, we will miss this golden opportunity.” He cited the need to add momentum to the process of improving bilateral relations.

Commenting on exchanges between young politicians on both sides, Nikai said: “No one has taken more Japanese Diet members to China.” He complained: “How many politicians have you brought from China?”
