Social Democratic Party (SDP) Secretary General Seiji Mataichi decided on Jan. 23 to run in the party’s leader election to be held in light of the end of incumbent leader Tadatomo Yoshida’s term. Since no other member appears to be running in this election, Mataichi is expected to be elected without a vote on Jan. 26, the deadline for filing candidacy.

The SDP’s four Diet members, Mataichi, deputy leader Mizuho Fukushima, Diet Affairs Committee Chair Kantoku Teruya, and former policy chief Hajime Yoshikawa met at the Diet on Jan. 23. Fukushima, Teruya, and Yoshikawa asked Mataichi to stand as candidate and he agreed.
