On Jan. 24, the Tachikawa branch of the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office announced the indictment of Hwang Matthew, a 25-year-old U.S. citizen, on charges of the violation of the Stimulant Drugs Control Act (import for the purpose of profit). He attempted to smuggle from the U.S. about 12.7 kg of stimulant drugs with a street value of about 800 million yen.

According to the announcement, the accused allegedly attempted to smuggle about 12.7 kg of stimulant drugs into his home in Tokyo’s Toshima Ward from the U.S. on Dec. 7 last year. A customs official discovered the drugs during an inspection at a Tokyo Customs facility in Tokyo’s Koto Ward on Dec. 11.
