With regards to the unscheduled landing of the “AH-1Z” attack helicopter deployed to the U.S. Air Station Futenma (Ginowan) at a municipal heliport on Tonaki Island (Tonaki Village) at round 8 p.m. on Jan. 23, the Ministry of Defense requested on the morning of Jan. 24 that the U.S. forces in Japan conduct an emergency overhaul of Futenma-based aircraft of the same model and suspend their flights. But it was confirmed that a helicopter of the same model was flying in the afternoon of the same day.
According to the MOD, a ministry official detected an aircraft of the same model taking off from Futenma airfield at around 2:50 p.m. The ministry is requesting confirmation by the U.S. side. In the prefecture, there have been successive accidents and problems involving U.S. military aircraft. An AH-1Z made a landing at an industrial waste disposal site in Yomitan on Jan. 8 as well.
