Gist of PM Abe’s account of teleconference with Pres. Trump on Feb. 2

The following is the gist of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s account to reporters of his teleconference with President Donald Trump:

This was my first teleconference with Mr. Trump in a while. We engaged in a candid exchange of views. I made a strong request for strict safety measures in connection with the series of U.S. military helicopter accidents in Okinawa. I voiced my appreciation for Mr. Trump’s devoting a considerable amount of time to the North Korea situation in his State of the Union address, arguing for the need to apply maximum pressure.

I talked about my plan to attend the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Olympic Games and to hold a Japan-ROK summit meeting. Since Vice President Mike Pence will also attend the opening ceremony, I would like to call for close cooperation also with the ROK.

We agreed on the need to continue to talk to various nations on the need to firmly implement sanctions against North Korea. We also agreed that we will continue to adhere to the policy of close Japan-U.S.-ROK cooperation in applying pressure on North Korea in order to make it seek dialogue with us.
