Japan’s small bluefin tuna catch will surely exceed international standards

A local fisheries cooperative in Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture, decided on Feb. 16 to reject a request from the Fisheries Agency to refrain from catching small Pacific bluefin tuna (weighing less than 30kg). The cooperative has not used up its allocated tuna catch quota and has taken into consideration that self-restraint would have a great impact on its fishermen’s businesses. This suggests that Japan’s catch of small Pacific bluefin tuna will surely exceed what the international organization allocates to Japan.
