IOC official: North, South Korea may form joint teams, march together at Tokyo Olympics

By Wakako Yuki in Pyeongchang

John Coates, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) official who chairs the coordination committee for the Tokyo Olympic Games, responded to Yomiuri Shimbun’s queries on Feb. 22. He said that on the condition of a political agreement between North Korea and the ROK, the IOC would probably approve requests to form joint teams or to march together in the ceremonies.

Coates said: “There has not been any concrete discussions about competitions or other matters, but it would be of great significance if the successful joint North-South team in Pyeongchang can be replicated in Tokyo.” He indicated that the IOC is ready to continue its support for North Korea’s participation in the Olympic Games and other international competitions.
