Top leaders of Kishida and Ishiba factions meet

Top leaders of the Kishida faction (47 members) and Ishiba faction (20 members) of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) met on the evening of March 1 in Tokyo.

Faction director-general and former Environment Minister Yoshio Mochizuki headed the delegates participating from the Kishida faction, and former Environment Minister Ichiro Kamoshita led Ishiba faction participants. Although neither Policy Research Council Chairman Fumio Kishida nor former Secretary-General Shigeru Ishiba participated in the meeting, it is thought that the executives of the two factions exchanged views in advance of the LDP presidential election set for this autumn. Both Kishida and Ishida have been named as candidates to succeed Abe.

“It is important that we explore various possibilities now,” commented a top member of the Kishida faction regarding the meeting of the two factions.
