The Ministry of Defense (MOD) has decided to install a ground-based warning and control radar system on Iwo Jima, part of the Tokyo village of Ogasawara, to reinforce the air defenses of Japan’s outlying islands in Pacific waters, such as the Izu and Ogasawara islands. The MOD will buttress up the functions of a training-purpose radar system over the next three years starting this fiscal year, with the aim of starting operational use in fiscal 2020. The defenses of the islands in the Pacific waters have been weaker than those of the Southwest Islands, which are facing China’s maritime forays. The MOD will respond to the Chinese military, which is expanding its sphere of activity to the western Pacific Ocean after it began operating an aircraft carrier. (Abridged)
