Futenma Daini Elementary School in Okinawa’s Ginowan City evacuated its students 242 times in total during the 39 days from Feb. 13, when it reopened its playground, until March 23, the end of the third term, due to approaching U.S. military aircraft, according to data compiled by the school. In December last year, the window of a large U.S. military helicopter dropped onto the school’s playground. The largest number of evacuations that took place in a single day was 29. There were also three days when students took shelter more than 20 times. Physical education classes are interrupted when students evacuate due to approaching U.S. military aircraft. The unrealized suspension of U.S. military flights over schools is continually infringing on children’s right to receive an education. (Abridged)
