TOKYO — Foreign Minister Taro Kono said Friday his ministry plans to form a new policy division focusing on North Korea.

The Foreign Ministry’s Northeast Asia division, which currently handles both North and South Korea, will be split into two divisions, possibly this summer, Kono told reporters after a Cabinet meeting.

The move comes as countries including South Korea and the United States pursue dialogue with the North.

“The workload of those working on North Korean issues has exceptionally increased…there are still budget and human resources issues, so (the change) won’t be sorted out immediately, but we want to deal with it as soon as possible,” Kono said.
