Gist of FM Kono’s meetings with ROK president, foreign minister on April 11

Gist of meeting between Foreign Minister Taro Kono and ROK President Moon Jae-in

Moon: A close ROK-Japan relationship is important for peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia. Cooperation between the two countries is important for the success of the inter-Korean and U.S.-DPRK summits. We ask Japan to play a constructive role for the achievement of the goal of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

Kono: Japan also hopes for the success of the two summits. We hope for close Japan-ROK and Japan-U.S.-ROK cooperation in resolving North Korea’s nuclear issue.

Kono: We also ask for the ROK government’s cooperation in resolving the abduction issue.

Moon: Let the two countries cooperate in resolving and improving the pending issues in the Japan-DPRK relationship, including the abduction issue.

Gist of meeting between Kono and Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-hwa:

Kono: Based on the international community’s past experience, it is not desirable to reward North Korea just because it has agreed to engage in dialogue.

Kang: Our position on maintaining the sanctions and pressure until progress is made in denuclearization remains unchanged. North Korea is saying it will suspend provocations while dialogue is taking place. It is also important to maintain the momentum for dialogue.

Kono: It is important to steadily implement the bilateral agreement on the comfort women issue.

Kang explained the ROK’s position.
