The Media Development Committee of the Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association on April 16 announced that it is “calling for a fundamental change in the direction of discussions” in response to broadcasting system reforms proposed by the government’s Regulatory Reform Promotion Council.

The association criticized the proposed reforms by saying they “downplay the important roles of ‘ensuring freedom of expression’ and ‘developing a sound democracy’ played by broadcasters while excessively emphasizing industrial development.” The association also expressed concern that if the quality of broadcasting deteriorates as a result of the reforms, “it will have grave consequences for people’s lives, such as a divided society due to spread of fake news and widening information gaps associated with the downsizing of the broadcasting industry.” (Abridged)
