Sony Corp. said Thursday it has teamed up with Carnegie Mellon University in the United States to develop advanced artificial intelligence and robotic technologies.

Sony and the Pittsburgh-based university, known for its highly advanced research work in the AI field, will focus on a robot that can prepare, cook and deliver food as the first step of their joint research and development.

The robot will be designed to manage a series of jobs including choosing the menu and setting dishes on the table and the two partners aim to put some of their jointly developed technologies into practice in five years’ time.

The Japanese electronics giant wants to speed up its AI research with external knowledge.

Among its recent AI-equipped products, Sony released its new robot dog Aibo in January.
