Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed in telephone talks on Friday to cooperate in tackling the North Korean nuclear weapons issue.

In their first phone talks, Abe and Xi also welcomed North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s recent commitment to denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, expressed last week at Kim’s meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae In.

The two leaders also agreed on the importance of implementing U.N. sanctions on North Korea to compel it to give up its nuclear and missiles development programs.

The phone talks came before a summit between Japan, China and South Korea next week in Tokyo and before U.S. President Donald Trump meets with Kim in the coming weeks for the first U.S.-North Korea summit.
