Okinawa municipalities send protest letters over U.S. Air Force officer nabbed for DUI

In connection with the arrest of a U.S. Air Force first lieutenant stationed at the Kadena Air Base (KAB) for drunk driving on April 28, the liaison council of Okinawa City, Kadena Town, and Chatan Town for issues relating to the KAB (chaired by Okinawa City Mayor Sachio Kuwae) mailed protest letters and petitions to the relevant Japanese and U.S. government offices.

The documents were dated May 8. They were critical of drunk driving and demanded drastic revision of the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA).

The letters were addressed to the KAB 18th Wing, the Foreign Ministry’s Okinawa Office, and the U.S. Consulate General in Okinawa. (Slightly abridged)
