Okinawa Times and Ryukyu Shimpo reported on a press conference held on Friday by Ginowan Mayor Sakima, during which he announced the details of his planned trip to the United States from May 21 thought 27. In the U.S. he plans to voice local residents’ desire for the early return of the Futenma base and their concern over incidents involving the U.S. military. The mayor is planning to meet with USG officials at the Departments of State and Defense, members of Congress, the Japanese ambassador to the U.S., and scholars in Washington on May 21-23 before meeting with U.S. Pacific Command officials in Hawaii on May 24-25. Sakima was quoted as saying that he would like to ask the United States to close and return MCAS Futenma and reduce the base-hosting burden on the local community.
