The government and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) are poised to streamline the duties of the Cabinet Office and the Cabinet Secretariat, excluding crisis management and disaster prevention operations. On May 25, the LDP Headquarters for Promoting Administrative Reform discussed a review proposal. The headquarters plans to compile a detailed reorganization proposal and submit it to the government.

The review proposal explicitly stated that “the organization and duties [of the Cabinet Office and the Cabinet Secretariat] will be streamlined so that the offices can quickly respond to policies issues prioritized by the Prime Minister.” Their current duties and duties as a control tower for government-wide efforts for new policies “will be transferred to the relevant ministries except in special circumstances.” The proposal also reflected a desire to prevent bloating. When new duties are added, the government and LDP will “conduct a rigorous check.”
