According to the Nikkei survey of 100 major Japanese companies, nearly 80% of them are not yet fully compliant with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the new personal data protection rules set to go into effect in the EU on May 25. Investigating the internal data subject to the regulation is taking time. Even if compliance work is not complete as of May 25, the chance that fines will be levied immediately is low, but spending time on compliance work could lead to a drop in companies’ international competitiveness.
