ROK top diplomat says early talks between Japan and North Korea “a very good thing”

South Korean Ambassador to Japan Lee Su-hoon delivered a speech in Tokyo on May 28. As for Japan’s role in denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula, Lee expressed hope for the early realization of dialogue between Japan and North Korea, saying, “It would be a very good thing for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to hold talks with North Korea at the earliest possible time.”

Lee pointed out, “Japan will be an important partner in helping North Korea to prosper after denuclearization. Japan’s funds and capital are crucial.” He also surmised that North Korea does not wish to depend on China and South Korea and said, “North Korea is eventually hoping to partner with Japan.”
