Okinawa Times and Ryukyu Shimpo front-paged reports saying that the GOJ is apparently planning to halt its direct subsidies to Henoko, Toyohara, and Kushi – three districts near the FRF construction site in Nago — following the victory of LDP-backed mayor Toguchi in the Nago mayoral race in February. The central government had provided subsidies to Nago from fiscal 2007 through 2009 under its subsidy program for base-hosting municipalities, but it stopped providing them when base opponent Inamine became mayor in 2010. In fiscal 2015 the central government began providing subsidies directly to the three districts of Henoko, Toyohara, and Kushi by bypassing the municipal government. According to the papers, the GOJ is planning to resume providing base-hosting subsidies to Nago and incorporate its direct funding for the three districts into the subsidies to the city.
