U.S. Ambassador to Japan William Hagerty and Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike took part in a sports festival at Sugekari Elementary School in Tokyo’s Meguro Ward on June 2. The participation was part of the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education’s “Global Friendship Project” designed to promote international exchange.
The board of education is working on a project to encourage students to learn about the cultures and histories of foreign countries and deepen international exchange at all public schools ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics. The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, which supports the idea, will send the Ambassador and diplomats to schools across Tokyo to give lectures and eat school lunch with students.
Hagerty and Koike played a giant-ball-rolling game with students at the sports festival. The ambassador told students, “The best thing for Japan and the United States is to learn about each other and deepen their friendship.”
