Gist of Japan-U.S.-ROK defense ministerial joint statement, June 3

We welcome the Panmunjom Declaration and the results of the two recent inter-Korean summits. We hope that the U.S.-DPRK summit will contribute to a comprehensive solution to security and humanitarian concerns.

We welcome North Korea’s recent announcement of the suspension of nuclear and ballistic missile tests and the steps taken to close down the nuclear test site in Punggye-ri.

We agreed to support diplomatic efforts for the complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

We agreed that the implementation of UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions must continue and welcome international cooperation to clamp down on illegal ship-to-ship transfer of goods.

If North Korea fulfills its international responsibilities, there will be a dramatic improvement in the North Korean people’s security and prosperity.

We will continue existing security cooperation through trilateral and multilateral frameworks, including intelligence sharing, high-level policy consultations, and joint exercises.

Freedom of navigation and overflight must be ensured and all disputes must be resolved through peaceful means based on international law.

The U.S. reconfirmed its unwavering security commitment to Japan and the ROK and will continue close cooperation with them.
