Okinawa Times led with an article written by British journalist Jon Mitchell in which he claimed that hazardous substances, including jet fuel, were spilled at Kadena Air Base at least 95 times in the period between January 2016 and November 2017 and that such substances have leaked outside the base at least twice. Mitchell wrote that he learned this from internal U.S. Air Force documents he obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. The journalist claimed that a total of 63,366 liters, or 317 drums, of hazardous substances were spilled at the base.
