A survey conducted by the Nikkei and others has revealed that Japanese universities face an uphill battle in terms of research capability. In the category of “productivity of academic papers,” only four Japanese universities – University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Tohoku University, and Tokyo Institute of Technology – were included among the top 100 in the 2012–16 survey. Asian universities have focused on clearly defined strategic fields and are outperforming their Japanese counterparts.
In the 2002–06 survey, eight Japanese universities were listed among the top 100. While Asian universities have become more competitive, Japanese universities are stagnating. The result is that their relative position has dropped. (Abridged)
