More and more female police officers are being appointed to police station chief and other executive posts across Japan. The number of female police officers ranked “chief inspector,” who serves as a section chief and others at a police station, or higher increased to 447 in the last fiscal year. The figure is up about 3.5-fold from a decade ago. In Kanagawa Prefectural Police, a female officer was promoted to chief superintendent this spring. She is the first female police officer, among police officers originally hired for prefectural police, to reach the rank. (Abridged)
