Deputy CCS comments on DPRK claim that abduction issue has been resolved

During a Fuji TV program on June 17, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasutoshi Nishimura commented on a Pyongyang Broadcasting Station commentary that claimed the issue of the abduction of Japanese nationals “has been resolved.” He indicated that “the fact that this was said soon after President Donald Trump raised the issue (at the U.S.-DPRK summit) is rather a sign that the North realizes (the importance of the abduction issue).”

Nishimura emphasized that there is no change in the Japanese government’s policy of working for the repatriation of all abduction victims. Discussing a possible Japan-DPRK summit, he said that “it would not be easy for a summit to produce results” and pointed out that “while the abduction issue is particularly important, there will also need to be results with regard to the nuclear and missile issues. We would very much like to hold a summit if prospects [for the resolution of] these issues become clear.”
