Japan protests Russia’s plan to conduct missile tests near Northern Territories

The Japanese government lodged a protest on June 15 with the Russian government over its plan to test launch missiles near Etorofu Island in the Northern Territories from June 18 to 20, sources informed Yomiuri. Moscow had notified Tokyo of the planned test launches.

According to a Japanese government source, the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) received the notification on June 14. The Japanese Embassy in Moscow protested to the Russian foreign ministry, saying: “It is regrettable that this runs counter to Japan’s position.” Russia reportedly countered with: “This is an action inside Russian territorial waters.” The JCG issued a navigational warning on June 15 for ships expecting to pass through waters near Etorofu.

The Russian armed forces deployed cutting-edge surface-to-ship missiles on the islands of Etorofu and Kunashiri in 2016. The planned test launches may possibly involve these missiles.
