Rengo Okinawa (chaired by Norio Oshiro), a chapter in Okinawa Prefecture of the Japan Trade Union Confederation (Rengo), held an executive meeting on June 19. The meeting unanimously agreed to cooperate with a “group for holding a referendum on [Futenma airfield relocation to] Henoko,” which has been collecting signatures to call for the implementation of a prefectural referendum to ask residents whether they are for or against the Henoko landfill project. Rengo’s Okinawa chapter, the biggest local center in Okinawa, collected about 34,000 signatures and undertook other campaigns for the 1996 prefectural referendum [over the U.S. military presence in Okinawa].
