Cabinet support rate rises across the board after U.S.-DPRK summit

June public opinion polls conducted by media outlets after the U.S.-DPRK summit showed a rise in the cabinet support rate across the board.

According to the opinion poll jointly conducted by the Sankei Shimbun and Fuji News Network (FNN) [on June 16–17], the support rate rose to 44.6%, up for the second consecutive month and narrowing the gap with the nonapproval rate of 45.6%. The approval rate in the Yomiuri and Kyodo News polls were 45% and 44.9%, respectively, each edging above the disapproval rate of 44% and 43.2%, respectively. This is the first time for support to exceed nonsupport in these two polls since the surveys conducted in the first half of March.

Nippon Television (NTV) found the cabinet support rate at 39.4%. In NTV’s April poll, nonsupport reached 53.4%, the worst since the launch of the second Abe cabinet. Support fell below 30% in that poll to reach 26.7%. The cabinet thus was in the “danger zone.” Support has recovered 12.7 percentage points in two months.  In the April poll conducted by All-Nippon News (ANN; an Asahi News affiliate), support was down to 29.0%.

As for the NHK poll conducted right before the U.S.-DPRK summit, support and nonsupport were unchanged from the previous month at 37.8% and 43.5%, respectively. The Jiji Press poll was also conducted prior to the summit. In that poll, support was 35.5%, down 2.6 points from the previous month, and nonsupport was 43.4%, up 0.4 points. It is thought that the cabinet support rate showed no rise in these two polls due to the impact of the Moritomo and Kake Gakuen scandals. The U.S.-DPRK summit may have been a turning point for the cabinet support rate.
