The Naha City Election Administration Commission decided on June 25 to officially announce a mayoral election on Oct. 14 due to the expiration of the incumbent mayor’s present term of office, with voting and vote counting set for Oct. 21. The election will be seen as a run up to an Okinawa gubernatorial election scheduled for Nov. 18.

Mikiko Shiroma, 67, the city’s incumbent mayor, who supports Governor Takeshi Onaga, has yet to clarify whether she will run for a second term. The Liberal Democratic Party’s Okinawa prefectural federation is now screening candidates.
