Suga comments on U.S. request to halt imports of Iranian oil

NHK reported at noon that concerning the Trump administration’s request to completely halt imports of Iranian oil by November, Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga told reporters this morning: “Japan and the United States are discussing the U.S. plan to reinstate sanctions against Iran and I would like to refrain from commenting on the details of the discussions. We are carefully analyzing the impact of the U.S. measures and will continue to discuss this with the U.S. and other relevant nations so that it will not negatively affect Japanese firms.” In addition, Suga reportedly disclosed that Japan is also in contact with Iranian authorities. He refrained from commenting on when Japan is planning to reach a conclusion on how to respond to the U.S. request.
