“The group for holding a referendum on [Futenma airfield relocation to] Henoko” announced on June 28 that it has collected 8,502 signatures as of noon the same day. The civic group is calling for the enactment of a prefectural ordinance to hold a referendum to ask the people of Okinawa Prefecture whether they approve of the relocation of the U.S. Marine Corps’ Futenma Air Station (Ginowan City, Okinawa Prefecture) to the Henoko area in Nago City. The group will continue gathering signatures until July 23. But the collection of signatures is not on pace to reach one-fiftieth of eligible voters, or 23,172 signatures, necessary for directly asking the governor to enact an ordinance.
