Economy revitalization minister Toshimitsu Motegi met with British International Trade Secretary Liam Fox in the Cabinet Office on July 31. Fox said the U.K. is interested in the 11-member Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade accord without the U.S. (TPP-11) and expressed his country’s intention to join the deal. Motegi said he will “welcome” the decision and promised cooperation.

Japan, which wants to bring the U.S. back to the TPP table, aims to step up pressure on the U.S. by increasing the number of participating nations. Motegi said at a press conference after the meeting, “I think [the U.K.’s participation in the TPP-11] will have an impact on the protectionism trend,” expressing hopes for a wider participation in the trade agreement.
