All national dailies on Saturday reported on a meeting between Defense Minister Onodera and Saga Governor Yamaguchi on Friday in Saga during which the governor agreed to the GOJ plan to deploy GSDF Ospreys at Saga Airport by accepting its proposal to pay the prefecture a total of 10 billion yen in landing fees over a period of 20 years. Governor Yamaguchi told the press: “We are basically willing to cooperate with the national defense policy. We need to participate in some way.” In a statement issued afterward, Onodera thanked the governor for giving the green light to the deployment, calling the move a major breakthrough. The papers wrote that attention will be focused on whether the prefectural government will be able to obtain the consent of the local fishermen who own the land being eyed for development as a new GSDF camp for the Osprey deployment.
