NEW YORK — Hitachi Ltd. said Thursday it and Mitsubishi Corp. have received an order worth about $840 million to build a monorail system that would span Panama’s transoceanic canal and ease traffic congestion.

The order came after the Japanese and Panamanian governments signed a memorandum of understanding in January 2016 to use Japanese technology for the 27-kilometer project.

Under the deal, Hitachi and Mitsubishi will deliver 168 rail cars along with signaling and other related systems. Ansaldo STS, a Hitachi subsidiary, will also play a part in the project.
