In connection with the plan to deploy a land-based Aegis Ashore system at the Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) Mutsumi training area in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Hagi Mayor Kenji Fujimichi indicated at a plenary session of the city assembly on Sept. 4 that he has granted permission to the Defense Ministry to conduct a survey to determine the suitability of this area for the deployment.

Mayor Norihiko Hanada of the neighboring town of Abu has also given his consent, so the two local mayors are now in agreement.

Fujimichi said: “This is necessary to remove the local people’s anxiety and concern, so it is inevitable.” He also insisted that “it will not immediately lead to a decision to accept the deployment,” stressing that he has not accepted the deployment plan per se.
