The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which is aiming at taking back the Okinawa prefectural government in the gubernatorial election on Sept. 30, has been sending its senior officials to Okinawa.
General Council Chairman Wataru Takeshita came to Okinawa on Sept. 4. According to an LDP source, Takeshita will be stationed at the campaign office of Atsushi Sakima in Naha until the end of the campaign. The party is taking the unusual step of having one of its top three executives stay in Okinawa for about a month.
Election Strategy Committee Chairman Ryu Shionoya also made his second visit to Okinawa for the gubernatorial race on Sept. 5. He visited the local party chapters to solicit support for Sakima and went to Sakima’s campaign office to encourage the workers there. Secretary General Toshihiro Nikai was in Okinawa to campaign for Sakima on Sept. 3-4.
