Ecuador’s Minister of International Trade Pablo Campana, now visiting Japan, told Mainichi Shimbun on Sept. 6 in Tokyo that there is a possibility that Ecuador will further promote trade with Japan and may possibly conclude an economic partnership agreement in the future. The minister also presented his view that the country will consider participating in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement.

As Ecuador’s four neighbors (Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Chile) form the “Pacific Alliance” economic bloc, the trade minister said: “Joining the Pacific Alliance” is top priority. Membership negotiations will take one and a half to two years. After joining the alliance, we will consider participating in other economic mechanisms such as APEC.”
