The organizing committee of the 2020 Tokyo Games said Wednesday the Olympic flame will arrive in Japan on March 20 of that year.

The flame will touch down at an Air Self-Defense Force base in Miyagi Prefecture. It will be displayed in Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima prefectures, the three most affected by the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami that devastated a large part of northeastern Japan.

“I am looking forward to the arrival in Japan of the Olympic Flame, which will be lit in the ancient city of Olympia in Greece,” organizing committee chief Yoshiro Mori said in a statement.

“In conjunction with all 47 prefectures across Japan, we will continue to prepare for what we believe will be a great Olympic Torch Relay,” he said.

The Japan leg of the relay will begin in Fukushima on March 26 and it will travel across all 47 prefectures in Japan over a period of 121 days.

The torch will be handed over to Japan at a ceremony in Athens on March 19, following the flame lighting ceremony on March 12 and an eight-day torch relay in Greece.

The Olympic flame has been lit in Olympia, western Greece, since Nazi Germany introduced the idea of a torch relay for the 1936 Berlin Summer Games. The flame is ignited using rays of the sun and a parabolic mirror at the ancient Temple of Hera.

The Tokyo Olympics are scheduled to be held between July 24 and Aug. 9, followed by the Paralympics from Aug. 25 to Sept. 6.
