Abe: There’s also a “positive side” to Putin’s proposal

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, appearing on an internet TV program on the night of Sept. 19, touched on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal of signing a peace treaty within the year without preconditions. Abe said: “It’s true that [his proposal] brought us much closer to concluding a peace treaty. So there is also a positive side to the president’s proposal,” seeking the understanding of the public for the proposal. Abe also revealed that Putin said with the Northern Territories issue in mind, “I’ll include problems that (Japan and Russia) will have to solve in a peace treaty and will never fail to do so.” (Abridged)
