Secretary Pompeo expresses readiness to talk to DPRK

Asahi and Yomiuri wrote that Secretary of State Pompeo issued a statement on Wednesday welcoming the results of the inter-Korean summit held in Pyongyang on Sept. 18-19 by reportedly saying that the United States is prepared to immediately engage in negotiations to transform U.S.-DPRK relations. Yomiuri speculated that the United States is probably planning to move forward with denuclearization talks with the DPRK following Chairman Kim’s expression of willingness to denuclearize. The paper added, however, that the tug-of-war between the two nations will probably intensify because Washington and Pyongyang still differ over how to proceed with denuclearization.
