Komeito chief denies ruling party talks on constitutional revision

Komeito leader Natsuo Yamaguchi, appearing on a BS Fuji TV program on Sept. 21, commented on the recent statement by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (Liberal Democratic Party [LDP] president) that he would like to step up coordination between the ruling parties on constitutional revision. He expressed a negative view, saying: “We are not thinking of going ahead with ruling party coordination first in order to submit (constitutional amendment proposals).”

Yamaguchi stressed that such proposals are to be submitted by the Diet and they are different from legislative proposals or draft budgets discussed in advance by the ruling parties. He also stated: “The LDP should think about how to set the course for consensus building at the Commissions on the Constitution of the Diet.”
