LDP factions vie for appointments in Abe’s new cabinet

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) factions who supported Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s reelection for a third term as party president are now lobbying hard for appointments in the cabinet and the LDP leadership when Abe reshuffles them in early October. For the faction leaders, their ability to make Abe heed their requests is a source of their power as leaders.

On Sept. 21, one day after the presidential election, Policy Research Council Chairman Fumio Kishida, leader of the Kishida faction (48 members), the fourth faction in the party; Hakubun Shimomura, secretary general of the largest Hosoda faction (94 members), which is also the faction Abe used to belong to; and other politicians all visited the Kantei.

There are currently around 75 LDP Diet members serving at least their fifth terms in the House of Representatives or their third terms in the House of Councillors, which is the LDP’s criterion of eligibility for ministerial appointments, who have never been given a cabinet job. Since Abe intends to maintain the “basic structure” of his administration and retain key ministers such as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Taro Aso and Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, a fierce battle for the few remaining jobs is expected.
